Washington Wizards point guard Gilbert Jay Arenas, Jr. was charged with felony gun possession by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Washington, D.C. on Thursday January 14, 2009, stemming from a December 21, 2009 incident wherein he brought his four guns at the Verizon center.
According to Arenas, he just bought his guns because he wanted to keep it away from his children. He put it in his locker at the Verizon Center and then he took it out to play a “joke” with his fellow point guard Javaris Crittenton. He also stated that he didn’t know that it was illegal.
Authorities interrogated Wizards players including coach Flip Saunders and it appears that all of them have different versions on what happened regarding the Dec. 21 incident. Crittenton’s role in the said incident remained unclear.
Arenas is suspended indefinitely and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday. Possession of a gun at an NBA arena is a violation of the basketball league’s collective bargaining agreement. If ever Arenas will be convicted on the charge, he will be imprisoned for 5 years.
