The Miami, Florida-based cruise line brand Royal Caribbean International officially named its newest $1.5 billion, 16-deck cruise ship – Oasis of the Seas, yesterday, November 30, 2009. Oasis of the Seas is the largest, tallest, longest, widest, and most expensive cruise ship afloat. It is a 225,282-gross-ton ship that has 16 passenger decks and can carry up to 6,292 passengers plus 2,165 crew. It is five times the tonnage of the White Star Line Olympic-class passenger liner, Titanic. It is longer than any other aircraft carrier.
It has seven celebrity godmothers who preside over ceremony namely: Dara Torres, MTV’s first Latina VJ and Revlon’s first Latina spokesperson Daisy Fuentes, Grammy Award-winning Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan, Bond girl Jane Seymour, Keshia Knight Pulliam, nine-time World Champion in skating Michelle Kwan, and American artistic gymnas Shawn Johnson. Other celebrities like Corbin Bleu of High School Musical, Dancing With the Stars professional dancer Karina Smirnoff, and the NBA legend Michael Jordan were present in the ceremony.
Oasis of the Seas has variety of major features like the central park which has 12,000 trees and shrubs, a basketball court, a carousel with hand-carved wooden animals, cantilevered whirlpools overlooking the sea, a shopping promenade lined with bars and cafes, an ice skating rink, and rock-climbing walls. Royal Caribbean Chief Executive Richard Fain said that seven-night cruises start at $1,049 per person, double occupancy, for an inside cabin and $16,659 per person for the two-story Royal Loft suite, which includes private 843-square foot balcony and a baby grand piano. Oasis makes its maiden public voyage next week while it’s twin, Allure of the Seas, is set to launch on November 2010.
