Sailing instructors Ralph Mothes and Paloma Werner were shocked when a 35-45 foot, 40-ton Southern Right Whale smashed their 32ft-vessel Intrepid in Cape Town’s Table Bay. They were just watching the whale for about 100 metres away when it suddenly moved towards to their yacht. The couples said that they didn’t know that the whale will flipped in the air so they weren’t able to avoid it. After the said incident, the couple went back to shore in Table Bay.
The said Southern Right Whale, which is distinguished from others by the callosities on its head and a broad back without a dorsal fin, appeared to be unharmed. Luckily, the couple was not hurt either but their vessel was severely damaged and according to Sky News it will cost about £10,000 to repair.
The local Department of Environmental Affairs are investigating the said incident and allegations that the couple may have approached the whale illegally.
