Female genital mutilation (FGM) or commonly known as female circumcision was now prohibited in Uganda after a bill banning this procedure was passed by the parliament. This is considered as a traditional or sometimes they call it a religious procedure practiced by the people of Uganda and other countries which involves the partial removal (removal of clitoris) or total removal of the external female genital.
Offenders of the said bill will be put into prison for 10 years. If the offenders have killed the girl in doing this practice, they will be sentenced to life in prison.
Female genital mutilation is mostly practiced in African, Middle East, and Asian nation. It is most commonly performed between the ages of eight and fifteen. Over 100-140 million women has suffered genital mutilation and every year, 2 million girls are at risk , majority aged between 4 and 2.
FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION PROCEDURE
Women in the village will sing their traditional song while performing this ritual. The young girl is blindfolded and then carried off into the bush by the woman of the village. The girl will be held down while the practitioner cuts the clitoris with the razor blade. Tribes believes that after the clitoris was removed, the girl is considered as a real woman.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said that if female circumcision is performed it can cause severe bleeding, urinary and reproductive tract infections, infertility, and even death.
The United Nations said that this procedure is now widely recognized as violation of human rights. And so, UN declared February 6 as “International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation (IDAFGM).”
