It has been claimed recently that eating curry twice or thrice a week could prevent Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. Members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists stated that curcumin, can be found on popular Indian curry spice turmeric, can block the spread of amyloid plaques. Turmeric is herbaceous perennial plant and member of the ginger family called Zingiberaceae. The spread of amyloid plaques in the brain causes Alzheimer’s disease, which is the common cause of Dementia.
They have tested it in a 12 month rat which is riddled with plaques. They feed it with curcumin-rich diet and what happens is that it dissolves the plaques. Professor Murali Doraiswamy said that their next step is to test it on human amyloid plaque formation using newer brain scans.
Studies also shows that people in Asian countries with turmeric-rich diets have low rates of Alzheimer’s disease.
What is Curry?
Curry is a food derived from the South Indian word Kaikaari. Kaikaari is short term for Kaari which means vegetables cooked with Kari leaves, spices and a dash of coconut. In India, curry is now commonly called “gravy” but here in the US it is called “Indian spice.” If you know curry powder, it is a combination of coriander powder and turmeric which is now available in any supermarkets.
