DECEMBER 26, 2009 – China has launched the world’s fastest express train and the latest high-tech project which travel between Wuhan in central China and coastal metropolis of Guangzhou took just four years to build. China Railway High-speed (CRH) express train service covers a distance of 1,068 kilometers at an average speed of 350 km/h (217.5 mph) and it has capability to go much faster than that. It reduces a ten and a half hour trip (664 mile trip) to just 3 hours.
The express train has its first three services overnight and people crammed in to avoid being stranded and avoid a very long trip.
Ticket prices range from $72 to $120 (790 yuans) which is slightly above the price of a normal discount airline ticket.
In comparison, Japan’s reknowned bullet train has an average speed of 260 km/h, 232 kph in Germany and France’s AGV train has an average speed of 280 km/h. Beijing announced plans to build 42 high-speed lines with a total length of 13,000 km (8,078 miles) and capable of handling trains at between 200 and 350 km/h in 2012 in order to trigger economic growth amid the global crisis.
