French Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church Roger Marie Elie Etchegaray has undergone surgery in Agostino Gemelli University Polyclinic in Rome, Italy. The hospital spokesperson said that he’s now in good condition.
Eighty-seven year old Cardinal Etchegaray suffered a fractured hip in the commotion at St. Peter’s Basilica on Christmas Eve, December 24. The 25-year-old Italian woman named Susanna Maiolo, who has a mental problem, jumped a barrier and ran at Pope Benedict XVI and grabbed onto his vestments. Cardinal Etchegaray fell as he tried to stop the woman who attacked the pope.
Even though the popes encountered this kind of incident, Pope Benedict XVI didn’t mention the incident in the Christmas Eve Mass.
